If you have a business, you need a website – and by extension, you need website copy. But it can be nervewracking to hand over the most forward-facing part of your business (and brand voice) to someone else, which means that choosing the right website copywriter is the key to making or breaking your entire website project.
Here’s 13 (lucky, ofc) ways to tell if that copywriter is me (I’d be honored if it was)!
1 – I never stop at just copy.
Not that it’s ever “just copy” as the thing that gives your website function, persuasion, and sales – but when I deliver website copy, I’m also handing over:
- The framework for your website design, through wireframed (i.e., pre-formatted) copywriting
- Increased visibility and website traffic, through keyword research, selection, and placement
- A sh*t ton of time back (that you’d otherwise spend Googling things like “How long should headings be?” and “How to write a call to action”)
- A robust ROI – since my clients report back results like more sales with less active marketing work
2 – I write websites that pop off all around.
As a former website designer, I’m well acquainted with (insert your website platform here!) and I’ll write copy that ensures you get the absolute most out of its features.
I also do it with attention to detail and SEO in mind – since some of those flashier design features mean sacrificing keywords and visibility, which I’m not willing to compromise on (you didn’t hire me to hide your website under a Google rock, after all).
3 – I’m an actual person who writes like one.
As in: casual, relatable, compelling, and persuasive – all without being pushy or scummy. I take a relationship-first approach to writing and selling your offer that allows you to actually connect with your dream clients through your website copy, stand out from all of the scripted copy-paste sales pitches your competitors are using, and feel good about how you’re growing your business.
4 – I’ve worked in basically every industry, so I know how to make yours look good.
Good communication is THE thing that’s tied all of my jobs together – from my very first one in retail at an office supply store (v on brand for me and my notebook collection) to professionally baking and icing cupcakes to working in healthcare & mental health. I could tell you how each experience impacted me and how I write your website, but really – it’s the experience of having experiences that says the most. I’ve learned firsthand how to approach every business with a beginner’s mind, the attention to detail I need to research every last point, and a genuine enthusiasm for connecting with you and your audience.
5 – I’m a big-picture girlie.
Your business isn’t just your website – so my work isn’t, either. I *could* skim the surface and ask basic questions about your offers, but we’d both get bored (and it wouldn’t make you money) – so I start every project with an in-depth questionnaire that helps me get to know you, your mission, and how I can leverage your website and other marketing collateral to help you grow sustainably.
Whether you’re adding on blog posts, email sequences, or a sales page – I’m constantly turning over your bigger plans in my mind to make sure it all fits together and seamlessly directs your audience exactly where you want them to go.
6 – I play nicely with others.
I firmly believe that having your website written/designed should be fun – and most importantly, should make your life easier – which is why I’m always happy to collaborate with your brand/website designer, team, or whoever else is supporting you with marketing.
(And by that, I ofc mean that I’ll keep you and your designer updated proactively, so you don’t even have to ask me to send them a note)
Oh, and if you need a recommendation for a great website designer – I’ve got those too.
7 – I actually get how your website works (and how it should work).
Another designer-turned-copywriter thing – but I've never been interested in providing surface-level results, so I use my background in web design to guide your readers through a specific, strategic path through your website that takes them from “just browsing” to “booked.”
Because frankly – if you want your business to grow, you need a website that helps you do it, and treating each aspect of it (design, copy, SEO, development) as completely separate isn't how you get there. If you're taking your website seriously enough to be outsourcing even part of it, you deserve to work with people with a deep understanding of how their work contributes to the bigger picture (and are worth your investment).
8 – I will literally do it all…
When we work together, you have one job: to fill out your website copy questionnaire. The rest is simply showing up to our calls (one to kick off your project, and one to finalize your copy) and kick back while I take care of the rest. And bonus – the one job you do have actually helps clarify your mission and offer suite, which is why I automatically save you a copy for future reference.
You'll also never have to wonder if I need something from you, or the timeline for your project – I'm on top of my sh*t when it comes to both writing your copy and your experience in working with me.
9 – …While collaborating with you, of course.
I prioritize your input (it is your website, after all) and voice throughout the entire copywriting process, referring back to your questionnaire and our kickoff call to inform my approach.
Because I value our partnership, I also incorporate a collaborative approach to editing into your project – after receiving your first draft, we’ll meet for a call to review your edits, my notes, and the details together. After our call, I’ll make final polishes before sending over your completed copy!
10 – I’m not afraid of feedback.
Every copy project comes with two complimentary rounds of revisions (although it’s incredibly rare that we use both!)…
And I’ll be honest with you about why I do or don’t recommend we take a certain direction. If you want a yes girl, I’m probably not your copywriter – but if you want every single decision on your website to be made with a research-backed and experienced thought process, we’re gonna be the best of friends.
11 – I come with side effects! (But like, the fun kind)
It’s common that my clients have questions about how I’d recommend positioning, pricing, or developing an offer or campaign – which is why I often end up providing some business and marketing consulting as part of our project calls! (Just ask my clients – the Most Likely To Encourage You To Raise Your Prices Award AND Give You The Marketing To Make It Work goes to me, although we do need to shorten the name.)
12 – I’m the ultimate Type B+ sidekick.
My processes, project organization, and notes are meticulous, color-coded, and guaranteed to make our entire project not only easy, but more effective (miss a beat? I would never).
But in addition to being obsessed with keeping everything in line, I’m also chill about the other stuff – like giving you time to review your drafts, flexibility about needing to reschedule calls, and adding to your project as we work on it.
13 – I actually care about you and your business.
There’s a reason most of my clients stay in touch well after we work together, or have me come back for website/email updates – when we work together on your website copy, you’re getting someone who’s invested in your endgame and wants to come along for the ride with you.
As Hope put it, “I did not think that I would ever find someone who was as invested in the success of my business as I was – and I was completely wrong. Amy shows up in a way that I never thought anyone other than myself would. She celebrates the wins with me, she helps me strategize during the lulls, and quite honestly has become a very good friend throughout the whole process. Her services are not only boutique, but they are so meaningful, and it truly feels like I’ve added another woman to my community that is able to cheer me on and lift me up.”
So, are we meant to be?
If even one of these reasons hit home – you and I are a match made in copywriting heaven (a place I imagine to be full of pastel highlighters, sticky tabs for annotating, and dark roast with a splash of vanilla creamer).
